Barry Steakfries is the main protagonist of the Jetpack Joyride series, hailing as a crossover from his own series of games by Halfbrick Studios. He is a special guest and playable character in Dan The Man. These include Jetpack Joyride, Age of Zombies and Monster Dash. He is also the main mascot of Halfbrick besides Dan. However, he must be purchased via IAP (In App Purchase), inviting five friends to complete the full prologue of the official game, or unlocking him for free by installing Jetpack Joyride Classic on the "classic version" of Dan The Man. Most notably, his fighting style is different from the other playable characters with its own pros and cons.
Barry doesn't appear in the web series canonically, but he has appeared in the Fright Zone DLC released in October 21, 2017. Barry and Dan meet each other face to face, and team up to stop his arch-nemesis, Professor Brains, who also appears from the Jetpack Joyride series.
Appearance[]
Barry Steakfries appears the same as he does in the Jetpack Joyride series, wearing a tie, a blue gramophone salesman outfit (without sleeves) with dress pants, and sports a five ’o clock shadow on his face. He also has a Canadian haircut.
Notably, he doesn’t wear his famous iconic Machine Gun Jetpack on his back, but it does appear if he performs a successful Jet-Punch. Otherwise, he mounts his trusty shotgun on his back.
Personality[]
Barry is usually portrayed as an adventurous and serious character most of the time. He is willing to get into the action and take down whatever evil force is around. Barry also enjoys teasing others, especially Professor Brains and other bad guys. He will often make jokes and cool one-liners (as seen in Age of Zombies).
Barry's personality is seen more often in animations, vlogs, and Jetpack Joyride 2. He is sometimes shown to be oblivious, or sometimes humorous. He usually focuses on one goal throughout, and is determined to get that goal. However, he can also be reckless and can cause accidents in some areas. Barry hangs around with his friends, Craig and his robot-dog Flash.
Trivia[]
- Barry is the only playable character that has two idle animations.
- Barry is the only character besides Custom Character that bounces up and down when standing still.
Barry Steakfries' vlog. Found on the official Halfbrick channel.[1]
- However, many fans have seen this as a possibility that Halfbrick is considering making a sequel, or at least new DLC that addresses future stages for the series. Halfbrick themselves admitted on their official Dan The Man FAQ they are aware of popular fan demand for Stage 9, and are considering the possibility of one day fulfilling that wish. Barry was likely used in order to tease hopeful fans, though there is still no official word that a sequel/DLC will be made in the future.
- It was revealed by Barry Steakfries in his official October 2019 Halloween vlog that his shotgun has a name: “Barry.” His jetpack, on the flip side, has no name.
- Barry seems to always avoid talking about Dan, as it's proven by how he refuses to talk about Dan whenever he's mentioned.
- Barry takes a look at some art of him saying "I hate Dan The Man." He says he doesn't hate Dan, but claims they have a bit of a healthy rivalry. It was confirmed though that there was no rivalry between them.[3]
- In the last episode titled "The Farewell Episode," during the outro, the outro glitches, transition to Dan appearing at the end, possibly hinting at a Dan Vlog.[4]
- However, this was a hint at the series' revival, and Stage 9 released on November 26, 2021.
- Barry has three rock opera music videos.
- If Barry Steakfries idles in the game for a while, he performs one of two idle animations. One of them has him shrug similarly to Dan and Custom Character, the second one has him puts his ripped shirt sleeves back on his arms, only to rip them off again while laughing. This is a reference to his ”Shirt Sleeves Rock Opera” music video where he continually ripped his shirt sleeves off, much to the annoyance of the tailor who continued to fix Barry’s shirt.
- He is the first and only character to have different descriptions for his moves when upgrading.
- Barry is shown to only have three climbing sprites, while Dan and Josie have four.
- According to an interview with Nicholas Cornelius on Gamereactor, the game existed in the 80s as an arcade machine. The game's biggest fan, Barry Steakfries, loved the game so much, he went back into the 80s, yanked it, and brought it to the mobile phones of the present, inserting himself into it in process.[5]
- Despite this, Barry is not seen mentioning this in the game, his vlog, nor is it ever mentioned in any other media.
- Barry Steakfries also has his official own comic book from Halfbrick, named Barry Steakfries: From The Files Of Jetpack Joyride.
- Barry has an unused sprite sheet of himself. An older version of the sprite sheet, and smaller. This one shows him with a darker blue salesman outfit, a different shotgun, and hair that is drawn differently. This version of Barry has drawn pupils strangely enough.
- His color for black is #040204, and his color for white is #fcfdfc, along with Dan. Unlike other characters, whose color code is different.
- Halfbrick states the reason for this is to help with OLED displays.
